What does Coast Highway through the Village look like when it has a trolley running on it? On Sunday, December 6, Corona del Mar gets its first answer. The Corona del Mar Chamber of Commerce has added a hop-on, hop-off trolley to the 47th Annual Christmas Walk and marked it "new this year."
The Chamber runs this trolley for one afternoon. It is not the city's service. The timing still matters. The City of Newport Beach has already approved six trolley vehicles for a local route covering Balboa Island and Corona del Mar, and it plans to start that service in summer 2027. That makes the Walk the first time many neighbors will ride a trolley on these blocks, about seven months before the city's own vehicles are due.
The basics are familiar. The 47th Annual Corona del Mar Christmas Walk runs from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. It's free, and it has no set starting point. The Chamber's description is simply a stroll along the PCH sidewalks through the Village.
The Chamber's 2026 lineup includes:
Seventeen-plus is about the same as last year. The Daily Pilot's coverage of the 46th Walk counted nearly 20 local bands, along with Santa, business displays and heavy crowds. The entertainment is about the same size as before. The trolley is the one real change.
The Walk covers a long stretch of highway. Bands play at stops up and down Coast Highway, the vendor fair sits at Dahlia, and the Chamber has no single hub where everyone gathers. When an event has no starting point, people end up walking back and forth between stops all afternoon. That's the problem the Chamber says the trolley solves. Its listing describes it as a way "to easily get to all your favorite entertainment stops."
The Chamber has posted a trolley route map. It shows southbound and northbound service along Pacific Coast Highway. The map is the best guide to stops and should be checked before December 6. The Chamber has also linked an entertainment locations guide. That file was uploaded in November 2025, so any stage list it shows should be checked against the Chamber's updates closer to the date.
The bigger story is at City Hall. The city has been working toward a trolley serving Corona del Mar for about two years, and the steps are on the record.
| When | What happened |
|---|---|
| September 2024 | At a study session, City Council backed running the Balboa Peninsula Trolley on summer weekends and holidays through 2031. Council asked staff to study connections to Balboa Island, Corona del Mar and Newport Center. |
| February 2025 | A possible expanded route was described as using PCH and part of MacArthur Boulevard, looping through Corona del Mar and Newport Center. |
| November 18, 2025 | Council approved buying six trolleys from Model 1 Commercial Vehicles for a Balboa Island and Corona del Mar local service. |
| November 2025 | A city bulletin set summer 2027 as the start date, funded by more than $2.6 million in OCTA Measure M2 grant money. |
| October 15, 2026 | The city's new open-air trolley was shown at Corona del Mar's 3rd Thursdays. |
The money shows how the cost is split. The November 18, 2025 Council agenda set the vehicle purchase at no more than $2,321,340.24 and listed $2,624,060 in new OCTA revenue. That grant pays for more than vehicles. According to the staff report, $1,620,000 goes to capital, $986,060 to operations and $18,000 to marketing. The trolleys came in about $701,000 over the original estimate, so the city's share of the purchase is about 36%, well above the 10% minimum match. The city said it would ask OCTA for more money to cover part of that gap. Back in 2024, the city said OCTA could pay up to 90% of service costs through 2031.
The staff report names the vehicles: six Hometown Villager 178 CNG trolleys. Delivery was estimated for March 2027, with the expanded service starting that summer.
The schedule has shifted along the way. In early 2025, the Daily Pilot reported that officials hoped to test a holiday-season pilot in 2026 and might launch the route in summer 2028. The city's later bulletin moved the start up to summer 2027, and that's the current target.
The list of places the service would reach has also changed. The 2025 materials name Balboa Island and Corona del Mar. The city's October 23, 2026 bulletin describes the planned summer expansion as covering Balboa Island, Corona del Mar, Fashion Island and Newport Dunes. The city has not yet published a stop list or a detailed Corona del Mar route.
The city's first public showing in Corona del Mar was on October 15, at the 3rd Thursdays evening on Coast Highway. Stu News Newport reported that visitors could tour the new open-air trolley, take photos, and talk with senior civil engineer Eric Loke about the Peninsula service and the planned expansion.
That was the last 3rd Thursday of the year. The Chamber holds the evening event only in April, July and October. The Christmas Walk is the next big gathering in the Village, and it's the one where a trolley actually carries people.
The city's only current trolley line is the best model for what Corona del Mar might get. The 2026 Balboa Peninsula Trolley was free. It ran on weekends and listed holidays from May 23 through September 7, from 10 a.m. to 9:30 p.m., with 22 marked stops. Four trolleys ran each day, plus one more on holidays, and the city estimated a trolley every 15 minutes at each stop, traffic permitting. Riders could park free at the Avon Street lot with the code TROLLEY26.
Stops on that route include Avon Lot, Newport & 30th, Marina Park, Balboa & 15th and Balboa & Adams. In 2024, the city said the service carried more than 20,000 riders between Memorial Day and Labor Day.
Compare the fleets. The Peninsula runs four trolleys on a regular day. The new purchase adds six for a local service that's supposed to reach several more areas, and the staff report says it brings the city's total to 11 trolleys. Neither the Peninsula numbers nor the Walk trolley tells us how often a Corona del Mar trolley would come. That depends on a route the city hasn't released.
The Walk was always meant to send people into the shops, and last year's coverage shows where. The Daily Pilot's report on the 46th Walk featured Mayur Cuisine of India, Absolute Caviar, Lash Pilot, the OASIS Senior Center and White Dress Couture Bridal Boutique. Attendees told the paper the Walk is a yearly tradition, and they were pleased with the turnout.
The Chamber's 47-year description says the same thing. The event exists to celebrate "the businesses and restaurants of Corona del Mar Village." A trolley that moves people between stops on December 6 also moves them past every storefront in between. A summer service would do that every weekend.
The Chamber hasn't announced street closures or parking plans for December 6, so check its event page in the days before the Walk. The trolley map is posted there now, and the 47th Walk starts at 11 a.m. that Sunday.
